Profile
I am an economist whose research focuses on understanding the determinants of and relationships among insurance coverage, health care use, and health. A consistent theme of my research is the use of large-scale data on health care claims to understand how insurance design affects health care use. For instance, in two previous studies I have used health care claims data from workers’ compensation insurance to understand the impact of prior authorization requirements being placed on certain medications in workers’ compensation insurance. In these projects, I used various strategies to estimate causal impacts of requiring prior authorization and to assess the implications of prior authorization requirements for patients, doctors, and insurers. I have also conducted multiple studies about Medicaid, including studies about the impact of expanding Medicaid coverage on enrollees’ financial outcomes and on the health care workforce.
